The club enjoys the fishing rights on three local waters :- Westwater - shared with the Water Board. Fished May to August. Trout average from around the half pound mark but over a pound is not unknown. Baddinsgill - April to September. Average 4oz. A scale examination found that trout of that size averaged 5 years in age i.e. fully grown monsters! North Esk at Carlops- April to September. Again typical hill trout averaging 5.6 oz but some specimens of well over a pound have been tempted out by lucky anglers. All are typical hill lochs, full of small but succulent brown trout. We have a boat on the first two as they are classed as reservoirs and so there is no bank fishing. During the season we plan trips to a variety of other Scottish lochs normally within about 30 miles radius with one trip to Lintrathen which is in excess off 100 miles. These include- Loch Leven Lake of Menteith Loch Fitty Gladhouse Reservoir Megget Reservoir Tinto North Third Carron Valley Portmore Talla/ Fruid Reservoirs -to mention just a few, as well as River Tweed, River Clyde and our own little River Lyne that meanders through our village. Once during the season we have a 'needle match' against the Lothian and Borders Police Angling Club on one of the above waters for the 'Mayfly Trophy'. This is always a keen battle of skill and wits, with the winning team being the one using more 'tricks' of the trade than the others. A great day out, full of fun and friendship. We also run a 'Best Boat' Competition which is a fun outing, the winning boat having the best haul of the day. |
